3 Techniques to Help You Get Creative
As many of us do, I also admire creative & out of the box thinking advertisement when I see one. I always think to myself “how do they come up with this stuff?” but never really digged deep until our online lecture with Chris Hofbauer in the FH Joanneum Content Strategy master program.
Turns out, there are some solid & established techniques that could really help you.
“Creativity is just connecting things.”
— Steve Jobs
Nothing we see is coming out of sheer emptiness. It is always about connecting things that could highlight the best feature of your product and/or convey the message you want people to get. These techniques could help you in which ways you can connect them.
There are many of them but here are some of my favorite ones that I think could really help to get creative!
1- Mix and match
With this technique, the question we ask ourselves is “How can the problem and the solution be combined to make the product message clear in a single picture?”
We have 2 aspects: a problem and the solution. Consider what the product aims to solve and think of ways to combine them in one place.

2- Exaggeration
This method could be the most fun out of all, in my opinion. The main focus is to think highly of your product’s ability. Not being realistic about it what makes it bold, fun and eye-catching. There is really no limit!

3- Without words
Words are powerful. But do you know what is more powerful (and admittedly, challenging)? Ability to convey the message without using words.
“A picture is worth a thousand words.”
— Fred R. Barnard
Focus on the feature of your product you really want to highlight and think about the situations where this feature could show itself the most.

There are many other techniques to consider and play with. Of course, as Chris said in his presentation, these are just tools and you actually need to do the work. As long as we can find the connection, creativity will eventually rise up, with a little bit of help!
